"Kallie"

CATOOSA — A police officer shot a 2-year-old boxer Saturday morning and waited for animal control officers to arrive to put the animal down — an action that the dog's owner called cruel and unnecessary.

Carrie Williams said she was asleep when her dog Kallie was shot.

But the police officer's version of events conflicts with what neighbors have told Williams, who insists that her dog was sweet and would never harm a person.

"Every kid in my neighborhood plays with her," Williams said as she started to cry. "She is the least vicious dog in the world."

Kallie was her 4-year-old son's best friend, she said.

Police Lt. John Blish said the officer and three witnesses described the dog as lunging toward the officer to bite him.

"The officer has a right to protect himself," Blish said.

The dog was not wearing a collar, and the owner knew she had a hole in her fence that could allow the dog to get out, he said.

Police received a call about a vicious dog from workers installing satellite television equipment.

The workers said the dog, which they identified as a pit bull, was chasing them around.

The police officer, Keith Prince, arrived before animal control officers. He said he shot the dog between the eyes in the street because the animal growled and lunged toward him.
